How Should I Choose a Church?
A Non-Denominational, Bible-based Perspective

Choosing a church is a lot like choosing a neighborhood. You want to find a place where you can see yourself fitting in and enjoying things for the long-term. But not all churches are the same. There are five questions you should ask about a church before calling it "home." These are based on Biblical principles, and will help you make a wise decision.

What does this church view as the ultimate authority?

Some churches believe that traditions, opinions, or even a human leader are the "guiding authority" that they must follow, or they "edit" the Bible to fit their own style. Look for a church that believes that the Bible is the authority for all matters about which it speaks.

Read: 2 Timothy 3:15-17

What does this church believe about Biblical concepts?

It is important to find out what a church believes about the teachings of the Bible. Does the church have a strong desire to follow the Bible in every way?

Read: Psalm 119:105

*A summary of Weymouth's beliefs is available here. This might help get a feel for the types of things a Bible-based church would believe. A more thorough "statement" of Bible-centered beliefs can be found off-site, here.

What is the "spirit" of this church?

Consider the spiritual "temperature" of the church. Is it cold, lifeless, and shallow? Or is it warm, passionate, deep and growing? Do you feel connected to God when you attend the services, meet with the people, etc.?

Read: Galatians 5:22-23, Acts 2:42-47

What is the purpose and vision of this church?

Does the leadership of the church have a vision that focuses on fulfilling God's purposes? Are they "living it" or just "preaching it?" Are the people of the congregation excited about following Christ, growing in their faith, and reaching out to those in need?

Read: James 1:22-27, Matthew 28:19-20

Does this church fit my own style and personality?

Every church is unique, made up of different types of people from all different backgrounds. Is the church you are considering a place where you can see yourself making friends, participating, and growing in your faith?

Read: Hebrews 10:24-25

Deciding which church to attend is an important and exciting decision that has a lifelong impact on you and your family. Ask for God's help in determining what the best place of worship would be for your family.

Whether or not you make Weymouth your church home, my hope is that God will lead you to a place where you can be challenged to grow in faith, serve others, and enjoy your Christian life. If you'd like to speak with a pastor about Weymouth, or about church in general, feel free to contact us.
